Global Warning

Add ImageQuilt No. 64
February 2009

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources lists polar bears as “vulnerable” on their Red List. They predict that the total global polar bear population will shrink by more than 30% within the next 35 to 50 years.

The main cause of this projected decline in polar bear numbers is climatic warming resulting in loss of sea ice habitat for polar bears. Global warming is the biggest man-made threat to their survival.

If current warming trends continue unabated, scientists believe that polar bears will be vulnerable to extinction within the next century.

Quilt Notes

This piece of fabric was dyed with Pebeo Setacolor dyes. The darkest area running across the quilt was crushed together and painted with dye and rock salt and left to dry. The polar bears were fussy cut from a piece of fabric and used unaltered. The back of the quilt features one additional bear that has stopped to inspect the ominous global warning sign.
