Why Mexico?

Now here is a serious question.  If you could escape the cold winter, the freezing rain, the snow, the crusted-over windshields, the bitter winds blowing up your skirt, would you not make it so? Now suppose you weighed less than a gram. Travel arrangements to a friendlier latitude would be pretty much mandatory. The Monarch butterflies have triumphed over this, harnessing evolution for a satisfying outcome. While you and I are parting with plenty of cash for fancy resorts in Mexico, the Monarchs fly passport- and red-tape free to the exotic forests of that blessedly warm country.

Each year Cherrywood Hand Dyed Fabrics offers a new quilting challenge.  They chose a theme for the challenge and curate eight of their beautiful hand dyed fabrics to create a kit. Participants use only those eight fabrics from the kit to create a 20x20 inch quilt.  Previous challenges have included Bob Ross, graffiti, Princess Diana, and many more. To enter the challenge, photos of the completed quilt are submitted, and judges choose the finalists. These quilts are then sent to Cherrywood in Baxter Minnesota.  During the fall, the quilts begin journeying to various shows, including the Houston Quilt Market and Festival, Road to California, Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show (Oregon) and several American Quilting Society and other shows. 

This year, I was lucky enough to have Blanche, my monarch butterfly friend, juried into the show. It took me quite a few nail-biting months to come up with this concept.  The challenge fabrics sat on my quilting table for an interminable period of no ideas.  Finally, I started to think about why tiny butterflies would spend all that energy migrating 4-5000 kilometers from Canada to Mexico each year. It became obvious.  Who doesn’t love a tropical resort?

Here’s the first drawing I made that became Why Mexico?  Lucky Blanche will get to go to several quilt shows this year and next. She can save Mexico for another year.

Accidental Hacienda

One day we were out walking in the forest (more aptly called “the bush” here in the north) and found a trove of rusted treasure.  I say “treasure” because rusted items are surprisingly rare these days, especially those with the flat profile needed to “rust dye” fabric.  Flat pieces are essential.  Past attempts using amply dimensioned items such as railroad spikes have produced spotty messes and were somewhat gross and frighteningly anti-inspirational.

The rusted pieces we found were either long rectangles or vaguely letter E shaped pieces.  I wasn’t sure what I could make out of that, but surely a quilt design lurked in the heart of those pieces!

To “rust dye” fabric, you use white cotton, spray it with a water/vinegar solution, and set the rusted pieces on it.  It’s then covered with plastic and left to do its own thing in the great outdoors. A few hours works best. Any longer and you end up with more holes than cloth.  A stroke of brilliance being nowhere to be found, I simply placed the pieces on the prepared cloth and hoped for the best.

I was kind of happy with the end result.  But what exactly was it?  Months, then, shamefully, years went by, and every time I thought I had a sliver of an idea, the execution of it eluded me.  I was pretty sure I could turn it into a pueblo, one of those suitably rust-coloured Mexican villages, but no, at the end of the day/week/month no pueblo emerged.  Next, my idea was a rusted-out abandoned factory. That would be a cinch, it could be kind of abstract, just a suggestion of a factory.  I looked at photos of all kinds of defunct factories…nothing emerged from my fabric that resembled anything factory-like, not even a pseudo factory.  I tried simply machine quilting the piece to see if its inner transcendent beauty would emerge.  Nope.

Tired of grinding my teeth over this unyielding piece of fabric, I hung it in the closet where I keep my fabric.  At least a year went by, and one day as I was looking for something in one of the drawers, the rusted fabric snagged the corner of my eye and I thought, ‘That looks like a hacienda’.  I went back to my quilt table with the echo of that thought and had to ask myself ‘What on earth is a hacienda?’  I made an immediate trip to the land of Google Images.  Turns out, just about anything is called a hacienda these days, as long as it lacks aluminum siding.  Surely, I could turn my piece of fabric into something that might be construed as a hacienda, even if it was by accident that I had arrived at this concept.

I set to work and cut the centre “shape” away from where the rust had spread out from the edges of the pieces, appliqueing it onto a rocky setting in a desert.  The landscaping was a great opportunity to use up golden sparkly fabric from a blouse a friend no longer wanted (the conical trees), flowerbed fabric from my friend Helen, brick and roofing fabric from my sister, and tiger print fabric (the tree trunk) from my daughter. The tree leaves are made from layers of organza, sandwiched between a top and bottom layer of soluble stabilizer and machine quilted with metallic thread. 

It may have been a long journey fraught with ever-collapsing ideas, but quite by accident, I had arrived at my hacienda.

Polar Bear Express

This quilt is proof that lightning can indeed strike twice in the same place. 

In 2017 I completed Polar Bear Dip, a Row by Row Experience block designed by Christina Doucette (Needleworks Studio, Cochrane, Ontario).  The pattern for that quilt block was a gift from a friend who decided to pursue other projects.  (You can read more about Polar Bear Dip and Row by Row here.)

In 2022 one of our older guild members felt it was time to pass her stash on to other quilters.  Two members helped out, fearlessly taking on the challenge of how to share this great gift.  They came up with a brilliant plan, placing patterns and projects that were in various states of completion into brown paper bags.  These were then randomly distributed at the guild. No peeking into the bag was allowed. 

When I opened my bag, I could see that the karma of the quilting universe had struck. I had received the pattern for the block Polar Bear Express, a companion piece to the Polar Bear Dip quilt I’d finished in 2017.  Not only was it from the same designer and shop, it had some fabrics that matched those I’d used in my previous quilt. Karma? Lightning? Quilt Gods?  Since the block had travelled though many hands to reach me, I set aside all other projects and made this block into a small quilt that can now hang with its companion.

The town of Cochrane, possibly the only location with a world class live polar bear habitat, is steeped in polar bear motifs. To that end, they even have a polar bear painted on their water tower, so I’ve added a very tiny one to the water tower in this quilt.  It’s my belief that you can never have too many polar bears, even if they’re cloth ones.

You never know where a mere drawing will take you.  In this case it took this quilt all the way to Quilt Canada’s National Juried Show 2022.

I like to doodle while I’m talking on the phone.  Since my rational brain is taken up by conversation, the doodles I make are far more varied than the ones I actually “think” about. After I’d amassed quite a few of these during my Tuesday night phone calls with my sister, I thought it might be interesting to see if I could cobble them together into a cohesive whole. I also thought this might be a good subject for the guild’s challenge - to do a monochromatic quilt.  That’s a quilt that’s made from one colour and its variations. These two criteria proved to be ridiculously challenging, akin to climbing Everest in bedroom slippers and a tiara.

First came the design, where I took all the doodles I wanted to use and, using tracing paper, fitted them together onto a large sheet of grid paper. I kept moving the outline shapes around. I also kept adjusting them into recognizable objects.  What can I say – in my mind anything abstract is simply an exercise in modifying it into a “real” object.  So, things morphed, and an apple and a globe and several other doodles from the first design did not make the cut as it evolved to include a dragon, an armadillo, a black fish, a school of fish, a snake, an alien, and even an embryo.  How all these items are connected is a story yet to be revealed. Even to me.

The monochromatic part did not work out, as I had begun using fabric that varied in colour gradation from pink to purple.  It worked so well for this design that I just gave in to it and turned my monochromatic efforts to another quilt, My Mother’s Cats.

To bring this quilt to life, it required an intense amount of detailed stitching, with satin stitching around many of the shapes and minutely spaced machine quilting over the entire surface.  A three-dimensional flower was finally crafted after numerous attempts, giving the quilt a much-needed focus. I filed all the failed flower attempts with my bedroom slippers and tiara, in the Probably Never Box.

Under Way

Most organized groups of quilters pose challenges for their members.  These are generally fun and always optional, designed to get your creative juices and motivation beefed up. You don’t necessarily have to twist yourself into a knot to come up with your own challenge quilt, you can pass and no one will mind.  However, some of the most strenuous challenges come from completely innocuous places.  Under Way, was just that. It was a self-challenge. No group, just me. There was nowhere to hide, no chair in which I could bask while others took the lead and wowed me with their beautiful creations.

It began with a fabric panel gifted to me by my friend Ruth.  A “panel” is generally a picture printed on fabric, designed to be used as a whole piece.  It may depict a scene such as a landscape, or a bouquet of flowers, or a cute grouping of animals begging to be made into a baby quilt.  It might be horses, or maybe a Halloween or Christmas scene, with Santa or snowmen as the top favourites. 

This quilt was made from the Hoffman Fabrics panel, Beneath the Waves.  A panel may have a scene that stretches across the whole 40 inch width of the fabric, or, as in the case of Beneath the Waves, there may be two identical panels printed across the width.  So, I received not one but two copies of this stunning fabric.  Stunning to the eye…and the brain.  It had tremendous colours and appeal, but I could not see how I might use it. 

After I’ve used or auditioned each fabric for a quilt, I place it in a basket, and when the depth of fabric in the basket is sufficient to become dangerous, I put all the fabrics away. New fabrics also get placed in this basket, to remind me of what I’ve been up to.  Beneath the Waves stayed in this basket for about five years – never being put away in case I forgot about it…but never being cooperative enough to suggest what I might do with it. 

During “COVID times” I had to resort to shopping in my own stash, and I kept pulling out this panel, pondering it, and returning it to the basket.  I even went so far as to cut the two identical panels apart. That was scary, so I folded them up and returned them to the basket, pretending I hadn’t done it.  As we dragged on into the second summer of the pandemic, I was running short of ideas, fabric inspirations, and, at times, chocolate. These were desperate days. 

The Waves panel had SO much going on at the bottom…and SO little going on at the top.  Combatting all that negative space at the top seemed impossible, so I cropped it off. I felt hopeful. I added batting and a fabric backing and began dutifully quilting it around the various fish and marine creatures.

Soon enough I had a certified dog’s breakfast. That shapes looked more jumbled, not less. It belatedly became clear to me that this piece was never intended to be quilted (Note to self: Not everything in the world can be quilted) (How sad)  Quilting around the objects had made a super busy piece even busier, less harmonious.  Could I throw in the towel on the self challenge?  The whole thing would be a failure!  As I continued to try to see where things had gone off the rails, I focused on how eye-bogglingly busy it was.  A cushion made from this unquilted fabric would be spectacular - a quilt, not so much.

I began to select areas that could be “cancelled” out by overpainting using Inktense Pencils.  These are dye-pencils that are capable of covering up small areas by changing the colour or covering the print of the fabric.  I was able to create calmer areas where my weary eyes could rest.  Some elements on the original panel were out of scale and I covered them as well.  I cut pieces from the second panel to add as stuffed appliques to make the turtle and a few of the fish into three dimensional shapes.  I extended areas of coral by quilting over wool roving, modified other areas with hairy yarn or lace or thread painting.  I finished it off by adding a black inner border and a wide outer border. 

Hopefully, I’d met the self-challenge, and my goals were met.  The fish were now swimming, instead of my eyes!

Another Ending

Is it possible that there could be another ending for Humpty Dumpty, one where he doesn’t end up broken and yolky?  We’ve heard a lot about his demise, and the fumbling efforts of the King’s horses and men fooling around with Elmer’s Glue.  It never ends well for anyone. 

Inevitably, we fail to back the story up to its crucial beginning.  Why did Humpty D have a great fall?  Was he just plain clumsy? Given his shape it seems plausible. But maybe there was a darker element, one we’re afraid to talk about.  Was he pushed? Engaging his fool hardy gene for risk taking? Bullied beyond despair? Too slippery for the wall?  He’s a deeper character than we’ve been led to believe. 

In my iteration of the Humpty Dumpty mythology, there is no fall, great or otherwise. H.D. is simply enjoying the forest, the flowers, and his animal friends.  A rainbow has come out to lend its approval. He is happy with himself and the world around him. He’s admirable, not broken.

“Another Ending” began as a doodle that was made with no particular intent in mind, and was then tossed into a folder.  The brick fabric wall was created by using a tiny rectangle of sponge to stamp paint onto cloth.  It predated H.D. by at least ten years.  (My strategy of keeping every little bit of nonsense I create occasionally pays off.) The redwood trees were cut from an older rather unsuccessful quilt I’d made of a redwood forest. I willingly chopped up its trunks and branches, reimagining them for H.D.’s world. I endlessly patted myself on the back - I’d kept the unused “redwood” fabric pieces from that quilt for fifteen years.  You just never know what you’re going to stir together into a finished project…

In the end, all the bits and pieces that had been lazing around in limbo for years – the doodle, the brick fabric, the redwood quilt – came together. I like to think that they justify the clutter of boxes and drawers that house my collection of fabrics and past efforts.  And this newly imagined Humpty Dumpty agrees with me.

Blackout

What does a city look like during a power blackout? What about a quilted city?  

I’ve always wanted to do a skyline of a blackout.  When I was given the gift of a package of “Stargazers” fabric (Robert Kaufman), I knew I had the brilliant starry sky fabric that could hold its own against the stark blackness of the unlit buildings.  For the darkest buildings I pillaged the black velvet I’d been hoarding in the back of the craft closet.  A sliver moon was added in with various pieces of cast-off jewelry and wool roving along the horizon. The tilt of the horizon? Well, that’s pretty much how we feel when our beloved and mostly taken for granted electricity is denied to us.

Light at the End of the Tunnel - The Book!

I've finally reached my destination in my Light at the End of the Tunnel journey that I've described previously in the posts, Looking for Light, and Getting Started.

Having made 18 fictional characters into 5x5" quilt blocks it was time to come up with a plan for my Light at the End of the Tunnel challenge quilt.  The blocks would need to be assembled, and arranging them in a box didn’t count, not even if I put them in alphabetical order.  

A wall hanging quilt?  With over a hundred such quilts under my belt, the walls here are getting pretty full, and the padded cell décor is getting just the tiniest bit tiresome. I’m living in a fabric gulag. Also, a picture of each character wasn’t enough to convey why these imaginary people, dogs, angels, ducks, frogs, and gas stoves had not only mattered to me, but had guided me through many a ‘tunnel’ with their own brand of moralist fervor.  

I needed to find a way to help the powerful metaphor of the “tunnel” tell my stories.  Making the character blocks into a book became an obvious choice.  Each character would need an accompanying page of text with either a quote by or about that character, or what the character represented, or perhaps my thoughts on that character.  It was a monumental task - take eighteen things that are not real, and succinctly come up with their impact on my own personal reality. 


What follows are photos of each of the eighteen character blocks, accompanied by their explanatory text pages.  Some of the characters’ stories have been told in previous blog posts (Fever Foster, Nancy Drew, Beaky, Superman).  For the rest, their brief story - as told here - is no less meaningful.  You can click on the photos to enlarge them for easy reading.

How to Make the Tunnel Block Characters

5x5 inch squares of unbleached cotton, prepared as follows

Spray starch 2 -3 times

Sandwich layers, top to bottom:

Unbleached cotton

Fusible web

Fusible fleece

Fuse layers with iron

Backing is not added at this time

Next steps:

·       Choose a simple picture such as a line drawing, or one that can be easily be broken down into a line drawing

·        If you need to make a photo into a line drawing, follow these steps.

Ø  Print out the photo

Ø  Using a fine tipped Sharpie maker, trace it onto clear plastic to make a line drawing

Ø  Scan in the drawing

·       Create a text box in Word with the dimensions you want for your block, for example a 3.5x3.5” text box to place on a 5x5” block

·        Format the text box to use your drawing as the background - this will give you the correct size of the drawing

·        Print it out on regular computer paper

·        Pin the printed paper onto the prepared sandwiched layers

·        Free motion quilt along all lines using regular 40 wt thread, top and bobbin, using a very small stitch, and a fine needle. I used black thread, with a few exceptions.

·        Remove paper, using tweezers where necessary (tedious)

·        Pull all loose threads to the back using a hand sewing needle (even more tedious)

·        Outline stitching is now complete

·        Paint in the colour or shading using Derwent Inktense pencils and Liquitex Gel Medium

Fever Foster

For my Light at the End of the Tunnel quilting journey starring fictional characters that I've taken comfort in over the years, I had to choose one representative for all the stuffed animals I have loved (and continue to love) during my lifetime.  There are so many that it’s embarrassing. I was probably more obsessed than the average kid with these so-called toys.  My overactive imagination conferred each one with a personality and a unique life history.  And Fever Foster got the MVP award every year.

He’s one of the few stuffies I’ve owned that has a traceable lineage.  The small dog was given to me by my cousin, a very grown up fifteen years older than me. He was a gift from her boyfriend when she was in the throes of a terrible fever.  Aptly, she named the dog “Fever”.  As time passed, the fever abated…and so did the boyfriend.  As both these influences waned, I was offered the dog.  He was adorable, white and fluffy, with little black circles of felt for his eyes and nose. The combined belovedness of my cousin and Fever made this adopted dog my ultimate favourite. 

However, it was a bit of a problem that he came with a name, since naming a newly acquired stuffed animal was a key feature in claiming it and creating its personality.  My stuffed tiger had been named Bananaface.  It’s likely that my sister thought that one up, since it seems surreptitiously derogatory, something I had not grasped until this very moment.  I had a plastic-faced monkey that was simply named Monkey because I didn’t much like him or the stupid looking banana clutched in his hand.  Another, cuter, plastic-faced monkey was given a pair of my old glasses and named Little Ricky.  He sported olive green pants with buttoned suspenders.  He was large and capable of sitting, so he could occupy major amounts of time on the piano bench, disguising my absence from practice sessions.  Ultimately, his Fur Elise was much better than mine, and won him the new name of Little Rochie, when he began to rival the then-popular Liberace.

So, when Fever moved over to our house, he was an already named entity.  I put my property stamp on him by lengthening his name to “Fever Foster”, since he was an adopted stuffie.  Like Charlie Brown, he was always called by his two name designation. I found him a right-sized cowboy hat (he never knew that it was actually a pencil sharpener) and immediately knit him the requisite scarf. 

Of all the innumerable stuffed animals I have owned, he was the most unusual – and I don’t just mean just his charismatic, mild-tempered personality.  He was made of genuine sheepskin.  He had a comforting wool smell.  In his early years his sheepskin substrate was a great plus.  Later on, as it dried out and cracked and flaked off, not so much.  Bits of Fever Foster left a telling trail, always revealing his whereabouts.  I did my best to intervene.  At first I sewed his various cracks back together, and glued wool bits back onto his muzzle.  He dried out to such a degree that the little black felt circles that were his eyes and nose fell off, got lost, and had to be crafted anew.  Eventually his toughened hide rejected all needle piercings, so I knitted him a sweater (seen in the photo here) to conceal his un-healable wounds.

He was definitely not a toy intended to have longevity.  Eventually, as I put childish things aside (maybe a decade ago…) Fever Foster was placed in a dark box where, having finally achieved maximal dehydration, he ceased to deteriorate.  And while I still own this fine not-quite-but-almost-real dog, he is a literal husk of his former self, possessing an ever diminishing allure.

In his heyday, when Fever Foster and I were very young,  my imagination sent him on wild exploits, the most notable of which was fighting Germans at the Alamo.  This seems to have been a confusion of historical events gleaned from an evening spent watching a John Wayne movie flanked by  Hogan’s Heroes episodes.  I too probably had a fever. Or maybe that wasn’t it at all.  Maybe it's just that Fever Foster, a veritable king among stuffies, actually had that much pizzazz.

Nancy Drew

It’s hard to write about an icon.  Especially when the custom is to read about that icon.  And if that icon is your best friend in the realm of fiction it’s even more difficult. Now I wouldn’t want Nancy to think that she could ever supersede those great chums I went sledding with, or played jacks with, or crafted Barbie doll clothes with, but they were sorely lacking in the mystique that was Nancy Drew. 

Why oh why were my friends and acquaintances so deadly dull and lacking in mystery?  This in itself was a mystery.  Maybe they were just too young to be involved in what I came to know as “sleuthing”.  Nancy was the best, and even extended my vocabulary.

All knowledge conferred to children in the 1960’s was on a need-to-know basis.  And if it wasn’t a times-table, or tips on drying streak-free dishes, as far as my mother was concerned, you didn’t need to know.  The dividing line between adults and children at that time dwarfed the not yet doomed Berlin Wall.  So possibly the adults were keeping all those juicy mysteries to themselves.

As I worked through that line of thought, I could see that it didn’t make sense.  Wasn’t Nancy Drew a teenager or something around that age?  Then it hit me like an errant baseball bat to the head.  My sister, strutting around in her teenaged years, was hogging all the mysteries! I knew it!  But I needed to find clues to prove it.  I consulted my Nancy Drew books, The Hidden Staircase, The Secret of the Old Clock, The Sign of the Twisted Candles. Nothing there.  My eyes fell on The Clue in the Diary.  Now there was the item that was going to give me the clues I needed to solve the Mystery of the Missing Mysteries.  The cursive script in my sister’s diary was a bit hard to read, me still being in the printing phase of my literary development, but I muddled through enough of it to get the gist.  Boys. Dates. Basketball tournaments. Ugh.  Her life was even duller than mine.  After carefully combing through her diary, I pronounced her life completely lacking in mystery. 

How could Nancy live in a place that teemed with mysteries so numerous they outnumbered the pollywogs proudly swirling around in my pickle jar?  The closest thing that fell into the realm of mystery at my house was who ate the cookies stored away for Christmas. (Me).  Or, who forgot to hand over the teacher’s note about that incident in the schoolyard. (Me).  Or who hid all those undesirable pieces of pork chop under the edge of Dad’s plate.  (Also me).  Or who was the accomplice in the shooting of JFK? (Not me).

There was not one single solvable mystery to be had in my humdrum neighbourhood, which had stupid boring street names like Kent and Wilson, and not a single Lilac Inn or hidden staircase to spawn some interest.  Why were there lilac trees, but no Inn?  Not really worthy of investigation.  Even our house lacked mystery, having its staircase in plain view, no one having thought to hide it…and…it went down to basement, not up to some mysterious attic filled with dusty clue-rich treasures.  So unimaginative.

After reading our meagre collection of Nancy Drew’s till the covers fell off, and then reading those of all my friends, I grudgingly came up with a plan.  I would wait it out until I became a teenager, when gobs of mysteries would fall into my lap. I would solve them all, and maybe even let Ned help me, if Nancy could spare him. In preparation, I set aside the magnifying glass assigned to my stamp collection.

In the meantime, I would hang out with Trixie Belden.  She was more age appropriate anyway.

Superman, The Man of Steel, on Cotton

I’m trying to remember when I first stumbled upon The Man of Steel.  Probably, some older cousin forgot one of his Superman comics at our house.  Initial contact isn’t that important.  It’s the outcome that counts.

While I don’t know how the affair started, I do know that it has never really ended.  I still have that same fluttery feeling when I see that muscled blue unitard with the red cape flying defiantly behind it.  Surely this is the ultimate pinnacle of society’s ethics.  Surely it is a sign that one day we will seek to do only good.  And be able to fly.  My nine-year-old concept of Superman remains my adult version of him. 

 My childhood was littered with criminals, all of them fictional.  In this particular sphere, crime, in all its myriad ugliness, existed only so that Superman would have something to do - immerse himself in vigilantism.  It mattered not that he completely lacked any policing credentials whatsoever, and had never spent even one minute at any law enforcement academy.  He was an innate crime fighter, proving that you didn’t really need special training if you have enough passion. Without Superman, Lex Luther, the embodiment of badness, could easily take over the world in a single afternoon, subverting all that is nice and replacing it with all that is un-nice.  Bad without its corollary, good, is, well, just bad.  It’s the contrast that makes it salient.  And if you can add an amazing flying physique to that contrast it makes for some great escapist fiction, with a side order of morality.

But, despite all his prowess, Superman still had his foible. Notice that there is no ‘s’ on that word. Superman was assigned but one foible – susceptibility to kryptonite.  This substance is so synonymous with the concept of fatal weakness that things that cause us to fall prey to our flaws are now referred to “our kryptonite”.  Superman made that possible.

I always worried that I would find a chunk of kryptonite in the back yard.  It seemed possible, as other stuff showed up there inexplicably – bits of glass in brown, green, or blue (never clear), unidentified car parts, evidence of dogs we didn’t own, rocks that weren’t there yesterday. Landscaping wasn’t much of a priority back then, nor was there much guidance about where to throw your junk.  In the post WWII neighbourhood, you had a house, maybe a driveway, and likely a picket fence to enclose your kingdom.  Planting stuff was left up to God or Nature, depending on your leanings, and a mingling of grass and weeds was a more than suitable lawn.  The peony bush that crept over from the neighbour’s yard was dually claimed without further thought.  It was enough.

The on-going and seemingly insurmountable issue of the kryptonite threat kind of bothered me.  I felt like it shouldn’t exist, him being “invulnerable” and all.  But I could not deny the role kryptonite had to play in demonstrating how elusive and unreachable excellence could be.

The kryptonite thing got started when Superman’s planet spontaneously blew up, in what Wikipedia lists as a “cataclysmic event”.  There are no additional details.  In my ever-growing list of apocalyptic events to worry about, cataclysm doesn’t even make the first eighteen.  That kind of bothered me – if planetary annihilation happened to Superman, maybe it could crop up here too.  Thankfully, Jor-El, Superman’s dad, saw it coming. He built some kind of space cradle and jettisoned baby Superman into space at the last possible second, aiming it at the ever-reliable Planet Earth.  Baby Superman didn’t need food or diaper changes, so he was fresh as a rose and quite appealing when he and his space cradle plopped down at the Kent’s farm somewhere in fictional Iowa. They took him in and raised him like a single-bodied twin, with the Clark Kent/Superman alter-ego thing known only to them.

The ultimate downside of Superman's planet going kablooey (other than losing a whole planet full of very technically advanced people) is that it generated a whole lot of kryptonite, as is common with exploding planets.  And some of that foul mineral followed the super cradle to Earth.  Some of this kryptonite arrived sooner, some later, and most of it fell preferentially into the back yards of super villains, many of them babies themselves at the time.  This did not bode well for Superman’s future.

Kryptonite introduced me to a whole new term: invulnerable.  What? I had to look that up in the dictionary at school, the internet still being at least thirty years out from being invented, and Mom being too preoccupied with apple pie baking to stand in as a dictionary.  I discovered that things were either ‘vulnerable’ or ‘invulnerable’, but mostly the former. Kryptonite, in all its gleaming green glory, not to mention its alternatively coloured forms, could jolt Superman out of his never-going-to-need-a-gym state of health. He could be killed, or just be injured, or get sick. Superman could throw up.  

Was nothing in life perfect?

Despite the kryptonite affliction, Superman had a few lessons up his Spandex sleeve. Don’t be a criminal was probably the most memorable one, although I kind of liked the idea of crime, since it gave Superman and Nancy Drew a raison d’etre.  Other than that, it was all just the white bread world of Winnie the Pooh. 

Superman also motivated me towards independence.  Each Friday I was given my allowance, a quarter. It was never two dimes and a nickel, always a quarter.  Out of that twenty-five cents I had to come up with a sound financial plan each week.  Would I squander it on a sickeningly huge bag of candy, or maybe a modest bag of candy with an ice cream cone on the side?  A five-cent popsicle could also be good value for my money, leaving twenty cents for discretionary spending. But there was always that twelve cent Superman comic to consider. Issues of the comic didn’t necessarily come out every week, but the odd time two issues would come out in the same week, leaving only enough change for the purchase of a wad of gum drops.  Comics, however, could certainly be read numerous times, an excellent and lasting investment.  Foregoing the candy was a no-brainer.  I bought and read those Superman comics like a dying man reads the Afterlife Manual. 

Each Saturday I would take that twenty-five cents in my fist (never once losing it) and venture six block to the magazine store downtown.  I would bypass the local “corner store” in case they lacked the newest comic and induced me to waste my money on sponge toffee. It was a solo journey that I undertook with all the solemnity of a first climb of Everest.  If no new Superman issues waited in the display case, I would ponder other purchases, perhaps Richie Rich, or Donald Duck, or even Archie – but only if I thought this might be the week where Betty would triumph over that b----- , Veronica.  It was imperative to buy the Superman comic, lest he be stuck in kryptonite up to his neck.  If so, I would need to rescue him by grimly turning the pages until he out-witted his evil opponent.  After that, we would both need to retreat to our Fortresses of Solitude in complete exhaustion.

While Sunday school, regular school, and “the look” from Mom were all valuable in tweaking my moral compass, I could not deny that Superman played a more than a minimal role in the crafting of my ethics framework.

Beaky (Or Julie?) the Greedy Duck

When I was about eight years old my mother gave me a copy of Beaky the Greedy Duck.  I no longer have that book so I can’t consult it for a refresher of the plot.  However, I recall that Beaky was a white duck who wore a blue and white checkered pinafore, and lived with a bunch of other non-pinafore wearing ducks in a farm yard.  If there was an explanation for the pinafore it escapes me, as does what exactly a pinafore is.  What I do remember about the book was that Beaky, unlike all the other nameless ducks in the barnyard, was guilty of greediness.  A bad thing. 
 
This was the first time I ever stuck my head out of my childish self-centeredness long enough to examine my own character. Was I too weighed down by greediness? Had my mother given me this book as a lesson and a warning to mend my greedy ways?  Was I so far along on the Scale of Ultimate Greed that she could not face telling me, and had to let me discover my ultimate evil nature in a book?
 
This seemed odd. She was pretty skilled at telling me when I was too loud (my Dad’s Prime Rule being “no hollerin’ in the house”), or when I needed to be nudged back into unblemished obedience by remembering to take that clean hankie for health inspection at school.  A Kleenex wouldn’t do for that all important weekly event. It might get tattered in my pocket and was likely to come out with at least one gumball stuck to it. She was the picture of persistence on the topic of picking up the clothes that I’d artfully flung about my room.  But here it was in all its ugliness.  Greediness. I had a character flaw so monumental that it needed to be pointed out in a textual parable.  And this flaw was of such magnitude that I dared not address it by asking my mother about it.  It was up to me to mend my ways by avoiding the pitfalls of greed into which the motherless Beaky had unwittingly fallen. 
 
At age eight I was a little hazy on what did and did not constitute greediness.  Beaky wasn’t really helping me, seducing me into wanting a blue and white checkered pinafore just like hers.  Lacking the word for “coveting” I labelled that pinafore lust as “greed”.  Not only was Beaky not helping me, she was throwing gasoline on the fire of my greediness.  Why would Beaky do this to me?  Maybe greed wasn’t her only flaw. I began to suspect that all ducks were an unsavory breed, purposed with teaching naughty children painful lessons and subverting childish self-satisfaction.  Did adults know this about ducks?
 
Greed began to sneak up on me from everywhere.  It gnawed at me when I went for that second piece of pie…but not enough to stop me from eating it.  It glowered at me when I divided up the chocolates even though I gave away more than I kept.  What was the magic number needed to dispel greediness?
 
Possibly, “want” was greediness in disguise and I denied that my too-small gym shoes were in need of replacement, despite the appearance of my big toes through the canvas. When Christmas came, I circled an austere ten items in the Sears catalogue, not the usual twenty-five.  I clenched my jaw and left the picture of the Lincoln Logs un-circled.
 
But was it enough? Had Mother noticed how rarely the monster of greed squeezed me in its claws? If she did, she was adept at keeping it to herself. 
 
Like a dying leper clutching a Bible, I continued to read Beaky almost daily, searching for clues that would heal me.  When dust cover fell into a shambles my mother at last commented.  “You really like that book, don’t you?”  She failed to recognize that the stains she thought were Allen’s Apple Juice (the best kind, from the giant can), were actually tears of despair. 
 
I needed to up my game by giving something significant away.  Certainly not my hand-crafted Barbie clothes or the collection of scarves I’d knit for my stuffed animals. And not my Superman comics, which still had plenty of entertainment and enlightenment left in them, having been read a mere seventeen times each.  My eyes fell on my bag of marbles.  If I gave half of them away, I would still have plenty left to play with, especially since, being a girl, we did not play for keepsies.  That was for those crazed risk-taking bad boys with no respect for their own personal property.  I sorted out my least favourite ones with satisfaction - some of them being scratched, or chipped, or both.  I distributed them among various friends, and tried not to bite my lip too hard when I saw how emaciated that left the Crown Royal bag.  Battling greed required sacrifice.
 
No one seemed to notice my new found philanthropy, and how I always insisted that my second piece of pie be “not too big”.  How could I have extinguished a major, possibly fatal, character flaw and not one single person came forward on bended knee offering gratitude?  I was discovering how cruel the world could be.
 
One day when I came home from school, there was a brown envelope on the table.  For me. Oh joy, an unexpected gift, such a rare and precious thing.  My smiling mother directed me to open it.  It was…another book.  “Look! It’s the next one in the series. I subscribed for you - I know how much you loved Beaky”. 

Mick the Disobedient Puppy stared up at me with perceptive eyes.  I was pretty sure that Mick was about to make that duck look like a saint.

Light at the End of the Tunnel - Getting Started

Once again, the guild gauntlet has been laid down.  This year’s quilting challenge: The Light at the End of the Tunnel.  I’m hoping that when I read this in a few years’ time I won’t remember why we needed to visit this particular concept.

It’s now been a year since I’ve seen the other guild members in person, except for “lucky” circumstances - like when we’ve crossed paths in the hospital or at the drug store. Such is the wonder of living in a small city.  Like everyone else in my life, they have receded into figures that populate Zoom meetings, FaceTime sessions, or primitive non-video phone calls.  It’s a scary fact that the non-family member I’ve seen the most in the last year is the woman who cuts my hair.  And right now, even she is out of reach, all stores and so-called non-essential services being closed.  Strangely, dog groomers are open.  They refuse to cut my hair.  These are trying times.

Yes, it’s COVID time. We’re one year into a pandemic. Each dwelling is a private fortress. No non-family member can enter your personal Fortress of Solitude.  You can leave, but only at your own peril. Social gatherings, travel, and shopping have fallen into the forbidden zone; fashion has ceased to exist unless you are considering what face mask matches your parka.  We have all become major consumers of alcohol – on our hands.  For the first time in my privileged life, I am witnessing poorly stocked shelves in grocery stores, something I’d previously thought impossible. 

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”.  This bit of folk wisdom basically means, meh, wait it out. You’ll adapt.  You won’t necessarily be made stronger by adversity, but as time passes the hideous situation you’re facing will seem less onerous, giving you the illusion that you are stronger.  And really, you don’t need much more than illusion to get through situations you can’t possibly change. 

Different people are coping with the pandemic in different ways.  My sister is accessing every written word and podcast on the subject of coronavirus, knowledge being a cushioning sword.  My husband is tracking vaccine news at a fevered pace that has me running for the thermometer.   He gives hourly reports on the hopeful/shocking/enraging/encouraging statistics as they vacillate like lathered-up horses toiling along in the Kentucky Derby.

So, you can see why Light at the End of the Tunnel became the concept for this year’s quilting challenge.  Now there doesn’t have to be an actual tunnel, the idea is to create something that makes you feel joyful, happy or hopeful. Actually, reading over the minutes of the last meeting, I see it is “joyful, happy and hopeful”, but I’m pretty sure in that tall order, “or” should be substituted for “and”.  Nailing all three seems more like a lifetime pursuit, not a quilting challenge.

Of course, I am inclined to take things in a literal direction, so I immediately started exploring tunnels.  Virtually, of course.  I looked at online photos of tunnels, and investigated arches as well, because when seen in a disappearing cascade, they suggest tunnelishness.  Concentric rings and the like were also potential creative fodder.  All of these photos looked great, but, ugh, what about that ever-present monster,  The Copyright Beast?  Of sure, you can try to contact the photographer to get permission to do a derivative work, but, HA, just try to find that mythical unicorn-of-a-person after their photo has been sent through the mill of Google and Pinterest postings!  Sherlock Holmes would despair of ever pulling the cat of that labyrinthic bag. 

Never mind the photos. I drew a picture of a tunnel (okay, it was just a doodle) but could not make myself scale it up into a quilt. It seemed like something that would reactivate my vertigo if it ballooned into anything big enough to be hung on the wall.  I didn’t want to quilt anything that would require maintaining an ongoing therapeutic level of Gravol in my bloodstream. 

I consulted some photos we had taken of Kettle Valley Steam Railway in British Columbia.   This is a tourist site of walking trails through defunct railway tunnels.  My photos were so-so.  I had been more enamored with the rarity of playing with a flashlight in a tunnel than I was of capturing clever, nested tunnel photos.  Nothing quilt-worthy there.  Maybe I could do a flashlight in a tunnel...oh wait, I forgot to take a picture of that.

I consulted my artist friend.  She’s not a quilter, but when it comes to designing something, your medium of choice doesn’t matter.  Through discussions with her, I was yanked out of my blocked tunnel and into thinking about the actual concepts at stake: joy, happiness, hope.  I started to think that COVID with its seemingly infinite imposed limitations was perhaps not the first “tunnel” I had encountered.

Every life comes with at least a dollop of adversity, and sometimes it comes with gobs, shovelfuls, or even truckloads of the stuff.  It’s part of living, and like the days where you realize you left your wallet at home after pumping the gas, there’s just no getting around it.  But sometimes, you can temporarily escape from hardship.  Like everything else to do with the pandemic, it will have to be a virtual escape.  And while I’ve been known to perform my virtual escape act with tubs of ice cream, I do have to admit that is a fairly risky option if deployed too often.  And I have a drawer full of elastic topped pants to prove it.

But…what about…fiction?  Haven’t I done a disappearing act into fiction since I first encountered Beaky the Greedy Duck (so, so, SO, much more greedy and imperfect than me!) and Nancy Drew?  Didn’t I solve mysteries with Nancy when I lacked a playmate (as close as I got to the “end of the world” in my gloriously simple childhood) or the day I broke the frog flowerpot?  Didn’t I fight jungle ants with Tom Stetson when boredom threatened to chew off the edges of my soul?  Weren’t Charlie Brown and Snoopy my guiding lights who were not only funny but who seemed perhaps a little less lucky than me, making my own particular tunnel a little shinier?  These beacons were the collective fictional souls who had populated my childhood when the real stuff was, well, just too real.

Surely, they were quilt worthy.  I wondered if using images of them would awaken the slumbering Copyright Police. It’s a good thing Charles Schultz wasn’t looking over my shoulder during all those hours when eight-year-old me was trying to perfect my own Snoopy drawings!  I decided I would have to be willing to just take the insane risk of having Charles Shultz’s estate sue me for stitching one image of Charlie Brown.  Surely, they would not do this to me after I’d spent the better part of my allowance on those 40 cent joke books for years on end, and then sheltered those same books for over fifty years.  They would show compassion. It’s pandemic time!  We all have to make sacrifices.  

So, I’ve taken Charlie Brown and Snoopy and characters from Frogmorton, and I’ve outline stitched them onto unbleached cotton, and coloured them with Inktense pencils.  I have no idea if these squares and the others honoring my favorite fictional characters will ever make it into a finished quilt, or if perhaps they will just end up in a really pretty box sharing space with the dust bunnies under the bed. But, while making these squares, I have indeed experienced joy, happiness, and hopefulness.  I’ve also experienced the nostalgia of knowing that every member of my childhood household read these Peanuts joke books.  Numerous times.  And there it is - the light at not only the end of the tunnel, but at the beginning as well.
